Madame Alexander are releasing two dolls based on the hit musical Wicked this Fall. Set for release in November 2011 are the excellent Glinda and Elphaba dolls.
The dolls are portrayals of the two main characters from Wicked the Musical, based on the Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (1995), a parallel novel of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and L. Frank Baum’s classic story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900).
The musical is told from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz: Elphaba, the misunderstood girl with emerald-green skin, and Galinda, later Glinda, the beautiful, ambitious and popular blonde. Wicked tells the story in which these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North while struggling through opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, reactions to the Wizard’s corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba’s public fall from grace. The plot begins before and continues after Dorothy’s arrival from Kansas and includes references to locations, events, characters and situations from both the 1939 film and Baum’s novel.
Madame Alexander Glinda doll – the Glinda doll is a fully-articulated 16” Alex sculpt with long wavy Tosca hair and blue eyes, and she’s fashion fabulous in a hot pink bubble dress. The bodice of the dress features chevrons of striped pink organza topstitched with pink satin ribbon. The skirt of hot pink charmeuse is tiered with striped organza ruffles trimmed with hot pink lace. Accessories include pantyhose with attached pink ruffled panties, metallic pink leatherette T-straps and a hot pink satin purse trimmed with beaded appliqué.
Madame Alexander Elphaba doll – Elphaba was never one for color and she rocks her darkly-chic fashion aesthetic. This Elphaba doll is a fully articulated 16” Paris sculpt with green eyes, green skin tone, and center-parted waist-length black hair. Elphaba wears a dress of navy blue broadcloth with square neck bodice with diagonally-stitched soutache. Pleated straps work their way down the length of the bodice and join the box pleats of the asymmetrical, calf-length skirt. Black tights are worn beneath her dress and a black felt satin-trimmed witch’s hat is perched coolly on her head. Brown flock lace-up boots with black eyelets, and gold frameless glasses complete Elphaba’s witchy look.
Both dolls look fantastic, are 16″ high and are expected to be priced at $159.95
