Produced by the Dutch cigar manufacturer Ernst Casimir to commemorate the 1966 FIFA World Cup, the complete collection consists of 25 cigar bands. Twenty-two bands feature portraits of the players who contested the World Cup Final between England and West Germany. The remaining three depict World Cup Willie, the Jules Rimet Trophy and the official tournament emblem.

Today, these bands remain among the more unusual souvenirs associated with England’s famous 4–2 victory at Wembley Stadium on 30 July 1966.

Football Heroes in Miniature

The cigar bands celebrate many of the best-known footballers of the tournament. England’s victorious team is represented by players including Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters, Roger Hunt, Gordon Banks, Jack Charlton, George Cohen, Ray Wilson, Alan Ball and Nobby Stiles.

The West German finalists are also featured, including leading players such as Franz Beckenbauer and Uwe Seeler. Together, the bands form a miniature portrait gallery of the footballers who took part in one of the most famous matches in World Cup history.

Each band carries a small colour portrait surrounded by printed decorative detail. Their strong colours and compact designs make them attractive examples of mid-century commercial artwork as well as pieces of football memorabilia.

Complete collections of the 1966 World Cup Final cigar bands occasionally appear at specialist sporting memorabilia auctions. One set was offered by Sportingold Limited as part of a football collectables sale. Another example appeared at Stacey’s Auctioneers and Valuers, showing that the bands attract interest from both football specialists and general collectors.

Although they are not usually among the most expensive souvenirs from the 1966 tournament, their unusual format gives them considerable appeal. They are generally more affordable than original match tickets, programmes, signed shirts or tournament posters. Consequently, they offer an accessible way to own an original collectable connected with England’s World Cup victory.

Cigar Bands as Collectables

Cigar-band collecting is a recognised branch of tobacciana. Manufacturers once used decorative bands to identify brands, promote quality and make their products stand out. Some companies also issued themed series featuring royalty, military figures, actors, sporting personalities and historic events.

Many bands were discarded when the cigar was smoked. As a result, complete commemorative sets can become much scarcer than originally expected. The 1966 football series has crossover appeal because it interests cigar-band collectors, football enthusiasts and collectors of World Cup souvenirs.
