Montblanc Writers Edition – Franz Kafka (2004)

Please share on your social media

The 2004 Montblanc Writers Edition honours Franz Kafka. The design is part of Montblanc’s annual tribute to important literary figures and gives collectors a recognisable writing instrument associated with the author.

About the author

Franz Kafka (1883–1924) wrote The Metamorphosis and The Trial, works associated with anxiety, bureaucracy and transformation.

Pen design and identification

The 2004 pen uses dark red resin and platinum-plated trim. Its unusual body transitions between angular and rounded forms, an intentional reference to the transformation at the centre of The Metamorphosis.

The changing cross-section is the key design characteristic; photographs from several angles show it best.

Versions and collecting notes

Check corners and transitions carefully for chips, which may be easier to overlook than damage to a conventional round barrel.

Before purchasing, check the writing mechanism, condition of the resin or metalwork, nib where applicable, and the presence of the original presentation box and papers. Fountain pen, ballpoint and rollerball prices should be compared separately; avoid assuming every version was produced in the same quantity.
