About the author

Alexandre Dumas père (1802–1870) wrote The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo. His son, Alexandre Dumas fils, was also a successful writer, a distinction that matters unusually much for this pen.

Pen design and identification

The edition uses marbled resin, dark contrasting elements and gold-plated fittings, giving it a bold period-inspired appearance. The author’s signature is one of its most significant identifying features.

Some early pens were mistakenly engraved with the signature of Alexandre Dumas fils rather than Alexandre Dumas père. Both versions are encountered in collecting discussions.

Versions and collecting notes

A listing that simply says “Dumas” is insufficient: examine clear photographs of the signature and compare like with like when assessing sale prices.

Before purchasing, check the writing mechanism, condition of the resin or metalwork, nib where applicable, and the presence of the original presentation box and papers. Fountain pen, ballpoint and rollerball prices should be compared separately; avoid assuming every version was produced in the same quantity.
