Royal Copenhagen Kongens NytorvA decade has passed and the Danish design icon Blue Fluted Mega is ten years old. To commemorate this, Royal Copenhagen is today opening a major jubilee exhibition at the Krinsen garden of Kongens Nytorv public square in Copenhagen. Among other things, the exhibition is showing huge cups and giving a unique insight into the impressive 235-year history of porcelain.

On the threshold of the new millennium a young, hopeful designer contacted Royal Copenhagen. Her name was Karen Kjældgård-Larsen and her dream was to create a fresh interpretation of the classic Blue Flute pattern. In 2000 Blue Fluted Mega was a reality and the world was at once amazed, magnified, enchanted.

Today, ten years later, Blue Fluted Mega is well-established design history and the thrilling blue brushstrokes have become part of the Danish cultural heritage just like the original Blue Fluted dinner service.

At the jubilee exhibition in Kongens Nytorv three huge porcelain works have been set up – the popular thermo cups – as a tribute to the enlarged Blue Fluted Mega pattern. Furthermore, Royal Copenhagen’s painters are revealing how the iconic service comes into being through tremendous demonstrations showing, among other things, that a Blue Fluted plate takes 1,197 strokes.

The public can also get a unique insight into the history of Royal Porcelain and follow the story, which began way back in 1775.

The exhibition will run from 29 June to 22 July 2010, and admission is free to all.
