Continuing our Halloween 2022 look at some of the horror themed editions released by Royal Doulton we feature the Royal Doulton Count Dracula Character Jug. The Count Dracula jug was modelled by David Biggs (David B Biggs) and was released in 1997, the Royal Doulton Centenary, and was the Character Jug of the Year. It had a model number D7053. David Biggs has modelled a number of character jugs including other eerie pieces such as the Phantom of the Opera, Marley’s Ghost from A Christmas Carol, and others including Buddy Holly.
The model shows Count Dracula in a black cape with a red cravat with a wolfs head detail. The Count himself looks very much like the version portrayed by Bela Lugosi. The handle features garlic, atop an open window with a blowing curtain, and below a cross. The reverse of the handle features a bat. Lots of great details on this piece. It meaures about 7 inches high.
The base includes the Royal Doulton Centenary 1897-1997 logo.
We have found one trail version which has the garlic and cross in a silver colour. This trial version was sold at Kingham & Orme Auctioneers, for £80 in October 2019.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula is one of the most famous horror stories of all time. Published in 1897, the novel tells the story of Count Dracula, a vampire who moves from Transylvania to England in order to spread his curse. The novel is narrated by multiple characters, including Jonathan Harker, a young lawyer who travels to Transylvania to help Dracula purchase an estate in England; Mina Murray, Harker’s fiancée; and Dr. Abraham Van Helsing, a vampire hunter who is called in to help fight Dracula. The novel was extremely successful at the time of its release and has since been adapted numerous times for stage and screen including the 1931 film Dracula starring Bela Lugosi. Today, it is considered one of the most important works in the horror genre.
