With Halloween 2022 approaching we thought we would take a look at some of the horror themed editions released by Royal Doulton starting with the Royal Doulton Phantom of the Opera Character Jug.

The Phantom jug is a great piece and was modelled by David Biggs (David B Biggs). It was released in an edition of 2,500, and had a model number D7017. David Biggs has modelled a number of character jugs including other eerie pieces such as Marley’s Ghost from A Christmas Carol, Count Dracula and others including Buddy Holly.

The model shows the Phantom in a red mask (the mask varies from a red to a darker burgundy colour, but these are painting variations rather than colourways). The handle features theatre curtains, a lamp, a mask and a note marked Phantom of the Opera.

We have found one colour variation of the piece which is missing all red highlights from the Phantom’s mask. This may have been more of a trial than a colourway. This was sold at Kingham & Orme Auctioneers, for £250 in March 2018.

Gaston Leroux’s 1911 novel, Phantom of the Opera, tells the story of a tragic love triangle set against the backdrop of the Paris opera house. The phantom, a deformed and reclusive composer, falls in love with the beautiful soprano Christine Daaé. When she returns the affections of Raoul, the phantom’s jealousy consumes him and he takes her captive, forcing her to be his muse. The phantom is ultimately driven to madness and despair, leading to a tragic ending for all three characters. Leroux’s novel explores themes of unrequited love, obsession, and betrayal, and its Gothic setting and melodramatic plot have captivated readers for over a century. The book has been adapted into numerous film, television, and stage productions, solidifying its place as one of the most popular works of fiction ever written.
Price Guide For normal edition £120-£180.
