About Thunderball

Thunderball is one of the classic entries in the James Bond franchise. The 1965 film, starring Sean Connery as 007, set the standard for what all Bond movies could be. Action, suspense and gadgets are all part and parcel of the film, with some incredible underwater scenes that remain amazing to this day. It follows Bond’s mission to prevent a hijacked NATO plane filled with nuclear weapons from being used by SPECTRE agents; it features iconic moments such as jet packs and the beginning of SPECTRE’s Number Two both getting their comeuppance.

The underwater battle scene does seem to have the most influence on many of the toys and games created.

The Classic Underwater Battle

The underwater battle in the 1965 classic James Bond film Thunderball is a classic of cinematic history. The underwater battle in Thunderball (1965) is a spectacular finale to the film. Bond (Sean Connery) uncovers SPECTRE’s Number Two Emilio Largo (Adolfo Celi)’s plot to hold NATO to ransom with two stolen nuclear warheads. After 007 is captured by Largo, CIA Agent Felix Leiter (Rik Van Nutter) orders the US Coast Guard to parachute in and engage Largo’s men beneath the hull of Largo’s boat the Disco Volante. What follows is a spectacularly choreographed battle that is as beautiful as it is thrilling.

The 007 Underwater Battle Game from Tri-ang enables players to create the Largo v James Bond battle. The set is a key game for collectors and complete sets in good boxes have sold for $1,600 on ebay. The set includes a number of figures including red and black Frogmen, a Largo model and sharks.
