Moonraker was released in 1979 and although not critically acclaimed it became the most successful film during Roger Moore’s seven-picture tenure, and is still in the Top 10 among the entire James Bond franchise. It also had quite a number of commercial tie-ins including the first mainstream set of trading cards since Roger Moore took over as 007. It was also the first James Bond trading card set in the U.S. since Philly gum’s James Bond Thunderball set in 1966.
The Moonraker trading cards set was issued by Topps in 1979 and included 99 cards and 22 stickers. The set has blue borders and an inner yellow frame holds images from the film. The set features James Bond in various scenes and all the main characters and villains including Drax, Change and Jaws. The reverse is blue and includes an illustration of James Bond in his space suit and a write-up in a yellow box.
Did you know? A scene involving Bond and Holly inside what appears to be a meditation room aboard Drax’s space station, was shot but never used in the final film. Shots of this scene made its way into some of the press stills as well as the trading cards released by Topps in 1979. (Source IMDB)
