Fireball XL5, a children’s puppet television series from the 1960s, was created by the visionary husband-and-wife duo, Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. The show originally aired from 1962 to 1963, producing 39 thrilling episodes that entertained and inspired children worldwide. Set in the year 2063, the series followed the daring adventures of the spaceship Fireball XL5 and its intrepid crew as they protected Earth from interstellar threats and explored the mysteries of the universe. It remains a cult classic and we take a look at some of the Fireball XL5 collectables, Fireball XL5 merchandise and Fireball XL5 toys that have appeared over the years along with prices at auction and a Fireball XL5 price guide.

The series was inspired by the Space Race of the late 1950s and early 1960s, a period of intense competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. Amidst the excitement and fascination with space exploration, Gerry and Sylvia Anderson saw an opportunity to bring the marvels of the cosmos to children’s television. Together, they developed the concept of Fireball XL5 using their signature “Supermarionation” puppetry technique, which combined marionettes with electronic controls for more realistic movement.

Set in the year 2063, Fireball XL5 follows the adventures of the spaceship Fireball XL5 and its intrepid crew, members of the World Space Patrol. Their mission is to protect Earth from interstellar threats and explore the mysteries of the universe. Led by the brave dashing and resourceful Captain Steve Zodiac. Venus, the only woman on the crew, was portrayed as an intelligent and skilled doctor and scientist, breaking stereotypes and inspiring young girls of the time. Professor Matthew Matic, with his eccentric demeanor, brought levity to the series and showcased the importance of innovation and creativity in science. Robert the Robot, a ground breaking character in terms of design and function, served as the loyal and indispensable mechanical companion to the crew.

Zoony was a small, lovable, and intelligent alien creature known as a Lazoon. He was discovered by Dr. Venus on the planet Colevio during one of their missions. Zoony became a regular member of the Fireball XL5 crew, accompanying them on their adventures. Despite his small stature, Zoony had special abilities, such as telepathy and mimicry, which proved to be useful on several occasions. His playful nature and unique skills added an extra layer of charm and entertainment to the series.
