A number of small Royal Doulton character jugs were also used to create a series of cigarette lighters. There were 14 Royal Doulton Lighters created: Old Charley; Buz Fuz; Mr Pickwick; Captain Cuttle, Cap’n Cuttle; Mr Micawber; Beefeater; Falstaff; Long John Silver; Porthos; Rip Van Winkle; Poacher; Lawyer; Bacchus and Captain Ahab.

The main models used for lighters were released in 1958. Some character jug models were only made for a couple of years so these are less common and have more value and include: the Musketeer Porthos, Rip Van Winkle, and Captain Scuttle. The pieces used include designs by some of Doulton’s most celebrated designers such as Charles Noke and Leslie Harradine.
