A small painting by noted Scottish landscape painter James McIntosh Patrick, designed as a Christmas card for HRH The Queen Mother c1955, will be offered in Bonhams Scottish Sale on August 25th,. It is expected to make up to £8,000.
The oil, entitled ‘Christmas Morning Stobo Kirk’, depicts a family heading through crisp snow to worship at the historic Borders church and no doubt reminded the Queen Mother of many similar Scottish gatherings she had enjoyed.
The picture has been consigned as part of a large group of artworks from a private collection in Dundee, the artist’s home city, and had been included in his retrospective exhibition in 1987.
Bonhams Picture Specialist Chris Brickley says : “This little picture has great warmth and atmosphere, despite the wintry conditions, and recalls Patrick’s finest landscapes of the 1930’s and 40’s. We anticipate keen interest on the day.”
The sale will also feature Patrick’s view of Edinburgh from the Castle ramparts, designed as a railway poster around the same date. It will be sold with a letter to the vendor’s father explaining the circumstances under which it was painted, and is expected to fetch up to £3,000.
