Lowry Print Breaks World Record Price

Lowry Print Bonhams sale of Sir William Russell Flint and L.S. Lowry limited edition prints on April 11th in Leeds produced a clear star of the show with Lowry’s picture `Going to the Match’ making a world record price at auction for a Lowry print.

Bonhams Leeds saleroom smashed its own record auction price for this Lowry print with a price of £6,300 – the best price previously for this print image sold at auction was £6,000 achieved in March 2004.

The print shows a huge crowd of people headed for a sports stadium which is already packed. The traditional Lowry stick-like human figures are bent forward creating a powerful sense of people hurrying to the game.

The original painting, from which this print was made, sold in 1999 to the Football Association for a sum just under £2m – £1,926,500.

Prices for Lowry prints at the Bonhams sale were strong with several lots exceeding top estimate. The lithographs which are from much lower editions of 75 performed with particular muscle realising £2,300 for ‘The Viaduct Salford’, £3,000 for ‘Tree in a Square’, £2,600 for ‘Shapes and Sizes’ and £3,100 for ‘Francis Terrace, Salford’.

But the undoubted highlight of the sale was a new world record for a spotless example of ‘Going to Match’ at £6,300. The print was sold to an enthusiastic buyer after strong competition.
