The SylvaC Squirrel model 1144 is one of the company’s distinctive animal figures and is most readily recognised as an upright squirrel holding a nut between its front paws.

The example illustrated is finished in the familiar matt green SylvaC glaze and has the model number 1144 impressed to the base. The model dates from the earlier period of SylvaC animal production and is one of a number of squirrel designs made by Shaw & Copestake.

SylvaC Squirrel Model 1144

Animal figures were an important part of SylvaC production and today form one of the most popular areas of collecting. Rabbits and dogs are particularly well known, but the company produced a much wider range of animals, including squirrels, cats, deer, elephants, birds and many novelty designs.

Model 1144 depicts a squirrel sitting upright on its haunches, with its large tail rising behind the body. It holds a nut between its front paws.

The model is known in different finishes and colours. The green example illustrated here uses the classic matt glaze strongly associated with many SylvaC animal figures.

Identifying SylvaC Squirrel 1144

The most useful identification feature is the model number 1144, impressed into the underside of known examples.

Collectors should not rely solely on finding the word SylvaC on the base. Genuine Shaw & Copestake pieces can carry impressed marks, printed backstamps, paper labels or mould numbers, and some examples may have lost their original labels over time.

The mould number is therefore particularly useful when researching an animal figure. It identifies the factory model rather than its date of manufacture.

SylvaC Squirrels and Woodland Designs

Squirrels appeared on more than one SylvaC design. As well as individual animal figures, squirrels were incorporated into woodland-themed planters, jugs, vases and novelty pieces.

This makes squirrels an interesting small collecting subject within SylvaC in their own right. Collectors can encounter everything from straightforward animal figures to elaborate tree-trunk and acorn designs.

How Much Is a SylvaC Squirrel 1144 Worth?

When this World Collectors Net price guide was originally published in 2017, we suggested a value of approximately £20–£30 for the green model 1144 illustrated on this page.

Rather than relying on a fixed valuation, it is now more useful to compare actual realised prices. Condition, glaze, colour and variation can all influence value.

SylvaC Squirrel Sale Results

Matt Green SylvaC Squirrel 1144 – £26.42

A vintage SylvaC model 1144 squirrel in matt green, approximately 7½ inches high, sold on eBay in August 2026 for £26.42. The seller noted minor damage.

This result is particularly interesting because it sits very close to the £20–£30 value originally suggested by World Collectors Net in 2017.

Matt Grey SylvaC Squirrel 1144 in Collection – £190

A matt grey SylvaC squirrel model 1144 was included in a large collection sold by Gildings on 24 February 2026. The lot also contained numerous SylvaC dog figures and six books relating to SylvaC and sold for £190.

As this was a mixed collection, the £190 result should not be regarded as a valuation for the squirrel itself, but it records another colour variation appearing on the market.

What Affects the Value?

Condition is important with SylvaC animal figures. Check vulnerable areas such as paws, ears, tails and projecting details for chips or restoration. Crazing and staining can also affect value.

Colour and glaze may also influence collector interest. Familiar green examples are relatively easy to recognise, while less frequently encountered colours and finishes can be more desirable.

Correct identification is also important. Green-glazed animal pottery is sometimes incorrectly described as SylvaC, so the mould number, modelling and factory marks should all be considered.
