Royal Doulton Sung Ware was developed under Doulton’s Art Director and chief designer at the time Charles Noke (Charles John Noke 1858 – 27 May 1941). The striking Sung Ware glaze along with a range of experimental transmutation glazed wares were developed by Noke and chemists at Doulton and also included: Flambes, Titanian, Chinese Jade and Chang. Doulton Sung Ware was first introduced as a brand in the 1920s at the time when Doultons had created their own version of Flambé glaze. Chemists at the firm started to trial with the Sung glazes, and by controlling the different temperatures created a unique and stunning multi-coloured glaze. Charles Noke and others incorporated these glazes into the designs on the individual items to create one-off pieces of art.
We take a look at the very varied Sung Ware vases, plates, animals and other pieces and the prices they achieved at auction. Many Sung pieces were unique and these are the most sought after and have the highest values. Pieces signed Noke are also very desirable.
