The demise of the historic Waterford Wedgwood china and crystal company earlier his year, 250 years after its founding, came as a massive blow to collectors everywhere.

But now stock rescued from the foundering company is allowing connoisseurs to complete their collections and raising much needed funds for charity.

Items from some of the company’s most sought after brands – including Royal Doulton, Minton and Clarice Cliff – are going on sale in 25 British Red Cross shops around the country.

“This really is a coup for the British Red Cross, and great for the thousands of Wedgwood enthusiasts who still cherish the brand,” said Paul Thompson, head of retail for the British Red Cross.

“It’s sad that the credit crunch claimed such a historic British company, but I think people will be glad to see that its goods are helping the British Red Cross continue its work helping vulnerable people in the UK and around the world, despite the recession.”

The Red Cross shop in Romsey, Hampshire, is staging a special sale day on Thursday, August 6, when plates, cups, saucers and more will be up for grabs at discount prices.

Shop manager Teresa Goulding is expecting the event to be a hit with collectors and her regular customers.

“If people have beloved but incomplete Wedgewood or Royal Doulton collections, this could be their last opportunity to complete them,” she said.

“At the same time, this is also a chance for anyone to come along and pick themselves up a piece of history at a very reasonable price, and support a fantastic cause.”

Clare Blenkinsop was given Wedgwood Mason cups and saucers as a wedding present 25 years ago but has always wanted to complete the collection.

She said: “When the company went under in January I thought my chance had gone, but now, 25 years later, it looks like I will finally get to complete my tea set!”
