A rare first edition of the very first Harry Potter book, written by the acclaimed British authoress J K Rowling, fetched a magical £9,000 today (26 June 2007) at Bonhams.

Bloomsbury Auctions was packed to capacity with well over
250 people bidding to raise money for Book Aid International,
a charity which provides books for schools, hospitals, universities
and refugee camps in Africa.
Seven years after its arrival
in bookshops, the publishing phenomenon, Harry Potter and the
Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling, is estimated to attract bids
in the region of £1,000 – £1,500 at the next Bonhams
Sale of Books, Maps and Manuscripts in Edinburgh on December 14.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has, as expected,
broken all known and independently validated UK book sales records
for first day sales with an incredible 2,009,574 copies sold through
UK bookshops, supermarkets, internet sites, and newspapers on
its first day of release — Saturday 16 July 2005.
midnight on Friday evening, JK Rowling will arrive at the
Esplanade outside Edinburgh Castle to be greeted by 2,000
Edinburgh schoolchildren and their families.
Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, by J.K. Rowling, the sixth in
the bestselling series, has been scheduled for publication on
16th July, 2005
