Hagen-Renaker Message Board Posted by Kathy Hicks on December 16, 2009 at 04:22:43: In Reply to: Difference between San Dimas and Monrovia posted by amy on December 15, 2009 at 19:13:31: Anything prior to 1962 is considered Monrovia anything 1963-1975 is considered San Dimas according to the book. There are also San Marcos pieces which are 1980s and sold in 1986. The difference is where the plant was physically located in CA. Most Monrovia pieces have heavier shading and more detailed eyes with eye whites or tri-color eyes on horses instead of dot eyes. I don't know how to ID the dogs but I've learned on some of the horses. The matte was basically discontinued in the 80s because of the lead content. All that is made now is the gloss. I prefer the matte finish myself. If you don't have a book, you can email pics to me at davidkathyhicks@yahoo.com and I'll try to help identify them from my book. Most Monrovia pieces have a label on them with the actual name of the piece but sometimes the stickers are lost. : I am trying to ID a few Hagen-Renaker dog figurines I have. In researching, it appears they might be the San Dimas "era"...what does this mean? Is it a glaze or years produced? Or the finish which looks matte and more life-like than the glossy glaze or molds? I bought these late 1960s-early 1970s.
