Royal Copenhagen GlobeReleased in February and just reaching shops is Royal Copenhagen's latest series Globe - small sculptures for everyday use. Designed by artist Jens-Flemming Sørensen who found inspiration in nature’s own works of art when he was given the task of creating the new series, and his play with porcelain became Globe, a series of sculptural porcelain bowls and dishes based on the round, organic shapes of the globe.

Globe is Jens-Flemming Sørensen’s first foray into applied art. His successful debut is a collection of bowls and dishes, at one and the same time raw and organic like a force of nature and so harmonious in form that they will function as small sculptures in the home. But, according to Jens-Flemming Sørensen, the series is first and foremost functional everyday art that has been created to be used: “I wanted to produce a series that bore a sculptural stamp, but the most important thing was to create art that could be used in everyday life. It had to be a series with something rustic about it, and here it was exciting to discover the possibilities contained in porcelain, a material I had never tried my hand at before.”

Royal Copenhagen GlobeIn nigh on a lifetime he has breathed life into materials such as iron, marble and bronze, and he has used this experience to give Globe a robust stamp that becomes the delicate porcelain and gives the series an idiom all of its own. The bowls and dishes in the series come in several sizes that lend themselves to use in the home as imagination and temperament dictate. The bowls will bring life to seasonal flowers or fresh twigs, and when filled with chocolate, sweets or cakes, they will be perfect for serving a little something sweet with coffee. The curved shape of the dishes suggests all sorts of possibilities when it comes to serving, such as filling them with grapes, fresh berries, caviar – or a cool bottle of champagne with ice.

Jens-Flemming Sørensen

Jens-Flemming Sørensen (born 1933) long since took his place in the pantheon of Danish artists, and the 71-year-old self-taught artist is well known both in Denmark and internationally for his sculptures, decorative projects and installations. His works are full of organic shapes, often taking the female body as a point of departure and muse, and they have a dynamism, as if they are constantly changing and a new shape is about to burst forth, creating its own narrative.
Jens-Flemming Sørensen is behind several decorative projects, including on Toftegaards Plads in Copenhagen, Marselisbrg Castle in Aarhus, Copenhagen Airport and in front of firms like Grundfos, Louis Poulsen and Carlsberg. His sculptural works can be enjoyed at Galerie Asbæk in Copenhagen at regular intervals, and he is also represented in Göteborgs Konstmuseum, Esbjerg Kunstmuseum, Kastrupgårdsamlingen, Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum, Århus Kunstmuseum and Museum Beelden Aan Zee in Holland, among other places. Furthermore his sculptures can be enjoyed in Hamburg, Montreux, Chateau de Caix, Lyon, Washington, Florida and Abbey Gardens in England.
Jens-Flemming Sørensen lives and works in the small Italian town of Pietrasanta, a town with a fine tradition of sculpture that attracts creative artists from all over the world.

Globe consists of votives (8 cm) and two bowls (15 cm and 18 cm). The material is white, unglazed porcelain with blue or white glaze on the inside. Furthermore Globe consists of a limited series of large items also in unglazed porcelain and these items are a large vase (50 cm) and dish and bowl (50 cm and 36 cm).
