Marking a significant time in Rock history, Bonhams
Fine Art Auctioneers will sell memorabilia from one of the worlds
largest and best-loved Rock group, QUEEN in a sale of Rock,
Pop & Film memorabilia on Tuesday 16 November 2004.
Seen by over a billion people during the momentous Live
Aid appearance at Wembley Stadium on 13 July 1985, Bonhams
will sell the original Queen bass drumskin used by Roger Taylor.
The Ludwig Ensemble skin, 26 inches across, is painted black
with white lettering and autographed in marker by Taylor. Estimated
at £3,000-3,500, this skin was also used on Taylors
kit in the video for 'Hammer To Fall' the previous year and
is accompanied by a letter of authentification from the bands
Official Fan Club dated June 2001.
One
year later, with another electric performance, QUEEN appeared
in their sell out Magicconcert in 1986 with legend,
Freddie Mercury fashioned in gregarious stage costume. The outfit,
comprising a bright yellow jacket in military style with multi-buckle
fastenings and a pair of white trousers with red and gold piping,
will be sold, estimated at £8,000-12,000. Photographer
Denis O Reagan, working for NME at the time, documented this
moment in the form of a photographic print - estimated at £500-600.
O Reagan says Freddie Mercury was a paradox. He was outrageous
on stage - one of the best performers in the world and actually
quite shy off stage. Mercury also performed in this outfit
in the video for the 1989 single release, "The Miracle".
Photographic
prints by O Reagan also include Freddie in a silver skin tight
suit in 1975; at Earls Court Arena in 1978 and with Brian May
at Forest Nationale in Brussels, 1984.
A large collection of photographs of Queen, 1970s-1980s, unpublished,
privately-taken pictures of Freddie, the band and entourage
on various tours and other occasion such as recording sessions
and video shoots, comprising mostly colour prints, some Polaroids,
with a quantity of negatives will also be sold with copyright
is estimated at £3,000-4,000.
