Netsuke Message Board Message Board Posted by Grace on April 24, 2006 at 19:02:51: I was wondering the quality of this tiny vase that's about 3" high. It's glazed brown pottery in a blue/green glaze with lot of stress cracks which may or may not be part of the design. The front had the piece depressed in so that there is a tiny house carved in the background and the front must have been made in pottery and attached to the piece to be fired, so you can actually see past the front carving into the piece to see the bldg, then you can still look into the tiny vase to see inside where it's empty. The glaze only covers parts of the vase that do not have a Netsuke type design in the brown clay. Does this sound like a random work of art by a person taking a class to make Netsuke or could it be considered an important work of art? If someone would like to see it, I can take a picture and send it to them. Also, there may be two Japanese symbols written on the bottom (possible initials), but it's also stamped with "Made in Japan", so I was thinking it may be a tourist type of gift of little value or rather value to whoever has it in their possession. It's quite interesting and beautiful, and extremely unique even if it has no real monetary value. Thank you to anyone that may have ideas about his piece or how I can look up info about it. I find it very interesting. I've always admired the Netusuke carved out of ivory. Sincerely, Grace
