on old moorcroft there was nothing to indicate a second only a red paper label saying "potter to the late queen mary" nothing was marked on the vase, on modern i.e last 15 years or so a red dot or silver line on the base indicates a second, the silver line is about 3/4 of a cm long sometimes but not always going thru the WM mark, the red dot is a hole filled with red and very difficult to hide
