People obsess over variations because that means we have something that nooooooooo-one else does! Mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha .... fear my evil laugh ..... mwa-ha-ha-ha ...

In my opinion, owning a prototype is interesting only if you also have the "official" marketed piece as well. You can compare the two items and see what changes were implemented. A fruitless exercise, really, but I would imagine this would apply only a person who's really intrigued (read obsessed?) by a particular piece and who really wants to know the development their piece underwent through its creation. It's akin to avidly following all the behind-the-scenes stories of DVD movies.
