I'm not a collector so please hang in there. About 20 years ago when I lived in New Orleans, I was visiting a good friend (now departed) and I noticed this huge old Coca-Cola Display bottle in the corner of a room. I said "Hey! That's great." And he said, "You like that? Take it home with you, I've had it for 20 years and it just takes up space." So I did. I never gave it much thought until a couple of weeks ago when a guy came over to look at a car that I had for sale. When he saw the bottle, his eyes bulged out and asked if I was a Coca-Cola collector. When I said no, he offered me $500 on the spot for it. I told him that I didn't want to sell it, I like it myself. Within 15 minutes he was up to $1500, and it made me think, hmmm. He never even got around to looking at the car. He called the next day and said his top offer was $2200. Well, my wife got wind of this, and oh brother!
So, I told her that it would be smart to do a bit of research just to see what we're dealing with here.
After a week of searching EVERYWHERE, I've found nothing that even comes close to this item. I contacted the museum in Atlanta and sent some photos and they couldn't pin down exactly what it was either, other than it was for a huge display. But they said what was VERY interesting was the shape of the "C" on the "Cola" part of the bottle. They believe it was made between 1955-60.
Here's the info that I can tell you about this.
It stands 4 FT tall and weighs appx 35-40 lbs. It's looks to be a very thick papier mache over a sort of metal frame. On the bottom is a hole where you can see a sort of pipe where it was once attached to perhaps a huge tray that rotated, I just don't know.
The condition is wonderful, the only flaw is a small hole on the top of the cap and the piece is still there, hanging on like a flap. I was going to glue it back up, but I know that trying to do something like that without knowing what you're doing, could decrease the value, so I just let it be. A few small dings here and there, nothing serious.
I took over to a friend who has an auction house, and he said that in his 25 years in the business, that he's never seen anything like this as well. He said with the right bidders that it could go "out the window". He has a Coca-Cola book that he uses in his auction and couldn't find anything that resembles this either.
So, that's it. I never asked my friend where he got this item from, and he's gone now. I know there was/is a plant in New Orleans, so perhaps there's a tie-in there.
I tried to put a photo on here, and I'm not sure if the link worked. But if you email me at scottblackcornet@yahoo.com or call me at 860-884-9205 (Connecticut) I'll send you some large photos I took of it from all sides and top & bottom. If I don't hear of a better offer than the $2200 within a week of this posting, I guess I'll sell it to the guy who wanted it. I just didn't want to be a fool and let it go for a fraction of it's worth. I've checked all over, but if someone else may have any info on this, please contact me. Thanks in advance!

Scott
