I am a graduate student who is currently studying for my Masters in Archaeology at the University of the Philippines. In May 2009 we conducted fieldwork in Batangas, Luzon, Philippines on the ruins a late 1800s hispanic household. During the excavation we recovered more than 300 ceramic sherds and for my lab work this semester I am required to study these ceramics in order to date the soil layers as accurately as possible. I am a complete novice in this area and, as I am in the Philippines (a third-world country) we don't have the materials (books etc) nor experts to help me in this task; there is no one who has experience dealing with European ceramics.

While the majority of the sherds are Chinese there are still some European sherds. We are very interested in these sherds as they may help to convey the status of the house owners (European goods were very much valued in the Philippines as prestige items).

I have uploaded my photos onto Flickr under the headings European and European or Japanese sherds- http://www.flickr.com/photos/41748617@N02/sets/72157622119566788/ and http://www.flickr.com/photos/41748617@N02/sets/72157622119427390/
.
I am hoping that you may be able to spare some time to look at the sherds and see if you can identify them. While there are three sherds with markings (I know the companies they came from) the rest are small and I have been unable, despite much research online, to find their manufacturers and the period in which they were made.

I really hope you can assist me, as I have exhausted my other avenues.
Yours sincerely,
Christine
