Dear Sabrina,
Welcome to the Barbie universe!
This is the first rule of collecting:
1. Never, NEVER pay attention to the 1966 date on a Barbie doll's (or friend's) backside. All that refers to is the year that the Twist N Turn waist was patented. Barbie and friend dolls (that is, Mattel dolls the same size as her) had that 1966 date on their butts from 1967 to 1999. If you are buying loose dolls at garage sales, etc., pay more attention to the country on the back, not the date.
2. Second rule of collecting:
Never, NEVER buy Barbie dolls as an investment, thinking that 20 years from now you can sell each of them for hundreds of dollars. That happens with probably one out of every 100,000 dolls out there. Collect what you like, what you think is pretty, what you identify with. Even though you read comments by other collectors saying that they don't like a particular item that you like, well, just ignore them.
